Another Extension for the Patriot Act

February 3, 2006, 11:14 am

Congress has sent President Bush its second five-week extension of the USA Patriot Act, allowing lawmakers to haggle over the terms of a multi-year renewal of the controversial law.

The extension will grant extra negotiating time to a small group of senators who have sought to add civil-liberties protections to the law. Those lawmakers want parts of the act to be rewritten to give libraries and Internet providers, among others, the right to appeal when the Federal Bureau of Investigation seeks data on their clients.
