A growing number of university officials have turned to podcasting as a promotional tool, but the University of California at Merced has taken the concept a step further: The institution’s biweekly podcast is fast becoming a legitimate source of campus news and opinion.
The show — which is sponsored by the university and narrated by Alex Kang, a 23-year-old economics major — includes news bulletins, details on upcoming events, and features like the “study tip of the week.” It also courts a bit of controversy, as the Merced Sun-Star reports. In one episode, Mr. Kang spoke with students about an ugly incident at the University of California at Los Angeles in which campus police officers shot a student with a Taser stun gun (The Chronicle, December 1, 2006). —Brock Read
