Students at the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai will now only be able to access the Internet from their rooms in the afternoon and evening, authorities told BBC News. They say they want their students to develop well-rounded personalities, which they can do only by connecting with each other, officials say, not by spending hours alone surfing the Net.
What's more, unlimited free Internet was blamed for students' skipping morning lectures and dropping out of extracurricular activities. Students can still visit the library or their departmental laboratories to log on, authorities say. But if they are hoping students will get more sleep, the authorities may be disappointed. As the dean of student affairs told the BBC, after their in-room access to the Net was cut, students "soon pulled out guitars and enjoyed chatting with each other until late into the night." –Sierra Millman
