Christopher Maxwell, a 20-year-old California man, has been indicted on charges that he hijacked several university networks as part of a scheme to attack a hospital’s computer system. The assault, in January 2005, shut down the intensive-care unit at Seattle’s Northwest Hospital and temporarily disabled pagers used by doctors.
Mr. Maxwell is accused of conducting the attack by launching an army of "bots" — computers controlled remotely by a hacker — at California State University at Northridge, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. (Reuters)
