A group of Southern institutions has announced plans to create a supercomputer grid that is expected to rev up research at 24 colleges.
The network—called SURAgrid, in honor of its sponsor, the Southeastern Universities Research Association—has been in the works for three years, according to the Associated Press. Georgia State University and Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge will be the first institutions to join the grid: They will use equipment provided by IBM, which has sold hardware at a discount to the participating colleges. —Brock Read
