The Latest Science on Fake ID’s

March 29, 2010, 12:00 pm

Among the assertions reported in an abstract of a recent study of 1,098 students on the use and obtainment of fake identification cards:

  • • Fake ID’s are “highly prevalent” among underage college students.
  • • They are strongly associated with heavy drinking.
  • • If we knew more about how they were obtained and used, police and college officials could better enforce the rules on drinking.
  • • Twenty-one percent of students report having fake ID’s.
  • • More than 93 percent of underage students who own fake ID’s have used them.
  • • Nearly 30 percent have been caught using them.
  • • Fraternity and sorority members are more likely than other students to have obtained their fake ID through a Greek organization.
  • • Men were more likely than women to buy fake ID’s but less likely to be given them.
  • • Someone ought to study whether taking fake ID’s away from underage students reduces “(or exacerbates)” drinking over time.

Nearly 30 percent have gotten caught?! And they’re still that prevalent? Wow, that’s more depressing as an indicator of the intelligence of our younger generation than comparing math scores with Japan…

Someone probably got tenure for that study!

RE: #1 – given the prevalence, it doesn’t sound like getting caught is much of disincentive – what happens? you get kicked out of the bar? Have to buy/borrow/steal/make a new one? Back out at a different place the next night?

Startling insight about who’s likely to have obtained a fake ID through the Greek system . . .
