When I was in college in the early 60′s my hadnwriting was so bad that one professor did let me type my exams in a separate room. This worked well for me since I could type faster than I could write. My then girlfriend had more difficult handwriting than mine and once got a B, without comment, on a major exam. Certain she deserved an A she confronted the professor who said that he couldn’t read her exam at all but figured that if she was my girlfriend she must deserve at least a B. She typed the exam over in his presence and got an A. In the future he made her write exams in class and then transcribe them. A laptop would have helped both of us (she was the only laptop I had at the time.)

My 8 year old son thought a manual typewriter he discovered at a rummage sale was the coolest thing ever. “Look Dad! It’s a keyboard and printer and you don’t need a monitor. It just prints right out!”
