Presidents Who Wear Bow Ties

March 19, 2010, 10:00 am

During meetings among university presidents, bow-tie wearers always notice members of their own tribe, Jill Laster reports in an article in this week’s Chronicle.

One of the bow-tied men pictured below is not a member of the presidential tribe. Guess which one (answer key at the bottom). And if your president wears a bow tie but didn’t make our story, please post a link to a photo in the comments section. Bonus points if it’s a clip-on or if she wears it with a dress.

The quiz is too obvious – #2 looks WAY too young to be a college president

http://www.augsburg.edu/president/I don’t believe I’ve ever seen Paul Pribbenow without a bow tie.

It would be nice to see some African American presidents in this line up. There are quite a few leading historically White institutions now and of course, a lot leading Black colleges and universities. Might be fun to mix it up a bit. MB

Scripps College’s former interim president (who was retroactively named full president), Fritz Weis, always wore a bow tie. His bio page is still available on the Scripps website: http://www.scrippscollege.edu/about/fritz-weis.php (it’s even got a type in the first sentence!)

My experience is somewhat different. I have observed the unusually high percentage of male trustees who wear bow ties. Those who go to trustee conventions, take notice, if you haven’t before.

Ronald Crutcher, the wonderfully elegant president of Wheaton College in Norton MA, regularly wears a bow tie. He happens also to be a renowned cellist and African American.Media photos available at wheatoncollege.edu

Our president has great shoes. She is seriously stylish. I’ve worked for lots of presidents who wore bow ties, but none for whom I was so covetous of shoes.http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/08/case_western_reserves_barbara.html

Here are two college presidents with their bowties (plus a trustee without one): Dr. Arol Augsburger of the Illinois College of Optometry and President E. Gordon Gee of Ohio State University. The ICO trustee is Dr. Richard Kattouf:http://library.ico.edu/index_filesExternal/bowtie.jpg

Lee Pelton, president of Willamette University (and an African-American), is not a constant bowtie wearer but does show up in them occasionally. Here’s an article with an image of him in one:http://www.blackperspective.com/pages/mag_articles/win00_leepelton.html
