A University of Georgia football player was charged with misdemeanor obstruction on Monday after he either wouldn’t or couldn’t give his middle name to a campus police officer who was investigating a fireworks complaint.
Jordan Lawrence Love was arrested because of a “breakdown” in communication when the officer tried to get the redshirt cornerback to give his name, Chief Jimmy Williamson told the Athens Banner-Herald.
“Mr. Love gave his first and last name, but he said he didn’t know his middle name, then said he kind of knew it, but didn’t know how to spell it,” Chief Williamson said. ”After I spoke with family members today I could see the officer’s point of view, where he thought Mr. Love was evasive and uncooperative, but [Mr. Love's] mother explained that he does not go by his middle name for personal reasons.”
Mr. Love’s lawyer issued a statement on Tuesday expressing confidence that the charges against his client would “ultimately be dismissed.” —Don Troop

Not “going by” his middle name? Okay, that’s fine; most people don’t. Not knowing his middle name? I’m not quite sure what to say.

I know what to say: He’s a football player.

To oldcommprof, simplistic and negative stereotyping of groups of people may make you feel good about yourself, but it is not helpful, it is hurtful, and you should know better. So, you are saying, without hesitation, that all fb players have a diminished IQ or don’t know their name. Do your discriminatory attitudes stop with fb players or does it extend to all student-athletes?
