Naked, Drunk, and Stupid Is No Way to Go Through Life, Son

October 1, 2009, 10:00 am

Mason Lacy blames a combination of beers and peers for his spur-of-the-moment decision to streak the halftime show at the Colorado-Colorado State football game on September 6.

“It started as a joke,” he says in an interview with the Boulder Daily Camera. “I said, ‘I should streak,’ and the kids around me said, ‘Yeah that would be hilarious.’”

Ten minutes later the 19-year-old University of Colorado student was on the field, in the buff, and surging with adrenaline as he dashed through the rows of the marching band. But he says that “almost immediately — especially as I was getting to the other side of the field — I was like, ‘Oh no, what did I just do?’”

Now the University of Colorado has suspended him for the spring semester, and he still faces charges of resisting arrest and trespassing. The police opted not to charge him with indecent exposure, for which he could have been forced to register as a sex offender.

Mr. Lacy’s college career is off to a bumpy start: He is on probation for three alcohol violations in the dormitories and a minor-in-possession ticket in the summer. Two years ago, as a high-school senior, he streaked a Boulder High School football game, but those charges were dropped because of his age. –Don Troop

This guy doesn’t learn very quickly, does he? That’s quite a bit of prior problems with alcohol and indecent exposure. The current charges don’t seem to be his biggest problem.

Mason Lacy is being done no favors by being protected from the consequences of his behavior by his high school and by the police. The families with small children who attended each game had a right to be in public and not expect to have their kids be surprised by his naked body running around. Flashers register on sex offender lists for a reason. Mr. Lacy flashed thousands of people, many of whom were presumably small kids and many of whom presumably had no desire to see him naked. Society, through the legal system, should take a stand against this behavior.

“Flashers register on sex offender lists for a reason.”Which in my opinion is a very stupid one. There are no data that would show that streakers are prone to violent sexual behavior, and if people in this country can’t tolerate seeing a human body, it is surely disturbing enough though for a different reason.

Sinners can always repent but stupid is forever.

This is a good example of why current sex offender laws are structured wrongly. If he had been charged with indecent exposure, he’d have been branded a sex offender for life. That’s ridiculous. Mandatory rules of that type need to be eliminated.

He might profit greatly by spending his suspension semester at an alcoholic treatment facility.

I grant you drunk and stupid, but you’ll have to argue harder against the naked part.

Raising kids is tough. My advice to each of mine was:Have fun; every once in a while go a little crazy; but don’t be stupid!

In Europe nobody would even comment on it. If everybody just ignored the nakedness, nobody would bother streaking. Being branded a sex offender for streaking is stupid and destructive because the intent is not sexual, but rather to have fun by defying conventional American prudery. As to the alcohol charges, most students and probably a majority of adults think that they are ridiculous. Many students indulge before 21, and the vast majority are never caught. Most then grow up to become socially normal adults. Actually students who do things like this may be more creative individuals. Look at Germany with a lower drinking age and no nudity restrictions. They are an economic powerhouse with better health care, lower infant mortality, and higher test scores. So he was not prudent!

My, my. We are getting so prudish. I guess I’m just getting old. I remember the 70′s when streaking was a nationwide fad. They were everywhere, including the Academy Awards. I also remember being 19. I freely admit that I tested the bounds of “stupidity.” They were some of the best lessons I ever learned.

Since we actually got through 12 comments wihtout having anyone note that Colorado’s football team is often called the Buffs, I guess I can’t resist….

Everyone is going on about the naked part, but this kid needs some serious help: two streaking incidents (inappropriate bids for attention) and multiple tickets alcohol violations (he didn’t just break the rules; he was stupid enough/drunk enough to get caught four times). This is not just normal “everybody does it when they’re in college” because not everybody is on probation or has such an extended history of problems.
