More Photos of Presidents With Bow Ties

March 24, 2010, 4:00 pm

So, we asked last week, do you know any college presidents who wear bow ties? “Do we ever!” came the response.

We told you we’d post their photos, so here they are. We decided to confine our gallery to current college presidents, and only those who appear to be faithful to the bowtie. (No neckties, bolos, cravats, or kippers.)

After this round, we’re moving on to something else. We’ve done scholars with research-related tattoos (with subsequent blogs here and here) and presidents with bow ties. Which academic fashion trend should we cover next? Please add your ideas in the comments below.

Until then, feast your eyes on these dapper gentlemen:

Paul Pribbenow, Augsburg College

Jerry B. Farley, Washburn U.

R. Bowen Loftin, Texas A&M U.

Ronald A. Crutcher, Wheaton College (Mass.)

Peyton Randolph Helm, Muhlenberg College

Donald V. Weatherman, Lyon College

George Campbell Jr., Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art

Geoffrey B. Shields, Vermont Law School

How about a feature on the fantastic pins many women in higher ed wear (like the famous pins of Madeleine Albright).

How about on professors who wear suits when they teach. Not too many anymore.

Love the bow ties! Next feature could be the most disheveled professor look.

I 2nd the profs in suits suggestion. Outside of the profesional schools this doesn’t seem very popular. I see birkenstocks with socks more often than ties.

As a proud bow tie wearer: I just want to mention that there are some of us who wear bow ties in academe under the age of 30. I consider it to be a genteel and fasionable accessory to my otherwise professional attire. It’s one piece of the South that I can proudly bring to California.Pic: http://www.inkandvellum.com/

Frankly — a bow tie says “I’m a WASP or a WASP wannabe” — frankly they make me snore. I am waiting for the day when prexies are snapped wearing a guayabera instead of dull bow tie.

Also, Leon Bostein at Bard College. Google images provides a swath of examples.

What a ridiculous looking bunch of self-centered elitists.

I’m surprised that a photo of Gordon Gee is missing from this article. He has now worn bowties at Ohio State (twice), Vanderbilt and Brown.

#10, What a knee-jerk and thoughtless reaction. How would you grade a student who made such gross generalizatins based on personal preconceptions?

K-16: “School” is a special place where special things are supposed to happen. Faculty/educators should reflect the distinction that is bestowed upon them, and expected of them.
