Games Presidents Would Probably Like to Ban

October 14, 2009, 11:26 pm

Banned in 1982 by then-President Bartlett A. Giamatti because of a spate of student injuries, the odd sport known as bladderball returned to Yale University on Saturday, reports the Yale Daily News. Feet were trampled, a pinky toe was broken, and noses were bloodied as students lunged to punch the six-foot inflated ball on a crowd-surfing journey across the campus.

(The video above proves that while bladderball is more fun to watch than, say, hacky sack, nine minutes of mise en scène videography will have you reaching for the Dramamine.)

Another team sport that must send administrators into fits — and students into back spasms — is buck buck. We’ll let the video below speak for itself.

The Chronicle and pretty much every news outlet (except maybe Reader’s Digest and AARP Bulletincovered the collegiate parkour movement three years ago, back when the guys in this video and this one could still walk, or at least do so without severe pain. (Done really, really well, by a star gymnast, it looks more like the video below.)

We also covered the urban-climbing phenomenon, better known as buildering. College lawyers probably don’t get too uptight about students climbing objects like the ones below, but when the testosterone starts to flow, and someone goes up the wall of a six-story dorm, administrators might start to get nervous..

Exploring the steam tunnels is another time-honored underground sport on college campuses, much to the chagrin of campus officials, like these ones three years ago at the University of Texas at Austin:

Finally, we come to a sport that — while it is often accompanied by drinking — is not dangerous in and of itself. Nonetheless, find us a college president who is proud that his students are playing this game:

This alum would like to see you cover Rice’s annual Beer-Bike Race.

Did that: http://chronicle.com/article/Beer-Bike-Its-Not-About/35501. Sounds fun, but as far as the name goes, i have to wonder about “truth in advertising,”
