On Wednesday night we posted a video of the Old Spice Guy plugging libraries. Today one of our interns sent us this brilliant Old Spice parody filmed at Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library. More like this. Please.

Has anyone else noticed that, with the exception of the New Spice Guy, everyone else that can be seen in the video seems to be white?

The student in this video is named Stephen Jones and he is the president of BYU’s stand-up comedy club, Humor U. BYU is home to the largest comedy club between NY and LA and it turns out some serious talent. You can learn more about them by going to humoru.org. I am the adviser for the student club. They perform over 40 shows a year to over 12,000 people. BYU has some very funny and talented students, and arguably the largest college comedy club in the nation.

jleah, now don’t you know that we are now allegedly “post-racial”?

Love this! Sending it to my Librarian Mom now for a laugh.

It’s on this librarian’s guide to library resources!

jleah, we are talking Utah, here. I count 5 or 6 persons of color, as near as I can tell in the fast-moving video, out of maybe 40 that appear in the frame. Probably pretty representative of the population around there. I’m more interested to know how many takes it took to get him to catch the backpack without looking!

jleah, BYU is a predominantly white campus. Their website says they have a minority population of 13%: http://yfacts.byu.edu/viewarticle.aspx?id=135 (and 98.5% LDS).

Mr. Jones acting is very good in this promo for the BYU library, and yes…he is quite handsome!

Gotta be careful, though. Sales for Old Spice have gone down since the advent of their new ad campaign. Don’t wish the same for libraries.

In the “more like this” department, our Student Ambassadors put together this riff on the SNL “I’m On a Boat” video, changed to “I’m on a Tour”: http://www.clark.edu/student_services/visit/on_tour.phpI realize that I am 100 percent biased on this, but to me this is a case where the remake is better than the original. “That’s right, I’m on a campus visit! That’s right, it’s so exquisite! … Benjamin Franklin, look at me now!” Lurve.

I will be showing this on our professional development day!
