A state commission unanimously approved a “revitalization” plan for West Virginia University Institute of Technology on Monday that includes eliminating the institute’s football program, the Charleston Daily Mail reported, but the panel did not approve any of the funds requested for carrying out other reforms. The institute is a division of West Virginia University, whose senior associate provost, Russell K. Dean, said in a letter that the football program’s high cost and low fan support made its termination necessary. Its season has ended, and it will not resume next fall. Other steps mentioned in Mr. Dean’s letter include the demolition of a residence hall, and the appointment of a transitional leader and a transitional committee that will plan further action.
