Valencia College, in Orlando, Fla., on Monday became the first institution to win the Aspen Prize for Community-College Excellence. The prize recognizes outstanding academic and work-force outcomes, and the Aspen Institute hopes the winners and finalists will serve as models to elevate community-college education nationwide. From the 10 finalists, it also chose four runners-up: Lake Area Technical Institute, in Watertown, S.D.; Miami Dade College; Walla Walla Community College, in Washington State; and West Kentucky Community and Technical College, in Paducah, Ky. Valencia will receive $600,000, while the other colleges will share the remainder of the $1-million prize money.
