With communications still sporadic in the aftermath of Tuesday’s devastating earthquake near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, administrators at several American universities sought information on student groups and others in the country. In Florida, officials at Lynn University had heard from one of 12 students and two faculty members who had arrived in Port-au-Prince about an hour before the quake struck, The Palm Beach Post reported. Administrators at Blue Ridge Community College, in Weyers Cave, Va., had yet to hear Tuesday evening from a team of students working about 20 miles outside of the capital to help people set up small businesses, reported The News Leader, of Staunton, Va. Alvernia University, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech reported having heard that students and staff members in Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic had come through the quake unharmed.
