Union Presses TIAA-CREF to Take a Stand On Behalf of Workers

October 14, 2009, 9:00 pm

The American Federation of Teachers wants TIAA-CREF — the pension giant that serves many of the union’s higher-education members — to promote fair labor standards for the workers at the companies in which it invests. The union’s executive council unanimously passed a resolution that calls for TIAA-CREF to “promote human, civil, and labor rights in its investment screening, shareholder advocacy, community investments, and public policy,” among other things.

They can take their “resolution” and shove it. Let them do good with their own money and stop trying to force me to do what they deem as good with mine. TIAA-CREF has wisely resisted this forced good-doism, and there is the CREF Social Fund for those who want a good-do fund.

Why so angry, jffoster? TIAA-CREF doesn’t have to listen to the AFT, and almost certainly won’t. If the resolution did somehow make it to a TIAA-CREF ballot (which doesn’t seem likely), you could vote against it. There’s no need to get so upset about a teachers’ union expressing its view.

Swish, “upset” no. Angry, yes. TIAA-CREF has to deal with this kind of good-doing manipulation attempts quite often. And these kinds of things HAVE made it to CREF ballots numerous times over the years.
