UC-Santa Cruz Shuts Down Amid Statewide Protests

Most of the University of California at Santa Cruz was shut down on Thursday as a result of protests against program cuts and tuition increases that have stemmed from waning state support for higher education, according to the Santa Cruz Sentinel. The demonstrations at Santa Cruz and on other California campuses, timed to coincide with a “national day of action” and a renewal of the Occupy protests, are calling for an overhaul of the way public education is financed in the state. Some demonstrators at Santa Cruz suffered minor injuries when the driver of a car attempted to enter the campus by plowing through a crowd blocking an entrance. Some protesters made their views especially vivid by building a 100-foot-long model of the university’s mascot, a banana slug, out of bright yellow tarps.
