The U.S. Department of Education announced on Wednesday that it would investigate whether Pennsylvania State University violated the Clery Act—the federal law that requires colleges to disclose information about crimes on their campuses and to warn students and employees of threats to their safety—when university officials failed to report allegations of sexual abuse to the authorities. Rep. Patrick Meehan, a Republican from Pennsylvania, called for such an investigation on Tuesday. The department’s Office of Federal Student Aid will conduct the investigation, and the Office for Civil Rights also will assess whether further investigations or enforcement actions are warranted, the department said.
