Extension lecturers in the University of Washington system have voted, 56 to 11, to form the first union for instructional employees of the system, according to the Washington affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers, which will represent them. A statement issued by the AFT of Washington said the lecturers, who teach classes in the system’s Educational Outreach English Language Program on quarterly or annual contracts, were cleared to vote on unionization as a result of the system’s decision to exempt them from the civil service. State law bars the unionization of system employees who are classified as civil servants.
