U. of Puerto Rico President Resigns Amid Student Protests

José Ramón de la Torre, president of the University of Puerto Rico system, resigned on Friday, according to the newspaper Primera Hora. Mr. de la Torre’s resignation followed months of student protests over an $800 special fee imposed to reduce the system’s budget deficit. Recent demonstrations have ended in violent confrontations between students and police officers on the Río Piedras campus, in San Juan, and a group of professors went on strike last week to protest the police presence on the campus.
