U. of New Hampshire Faculty Union Votes No Confidence in President

April 29, 2011, 12:35 am

Members of the faculty union at the University of New Hampshire have voted no confidence in the university’s president, Mark W. Huddleston, the Concord Monitor reported. A faculty union leader told the newspaper that the vote, taken on Wednesday, reflected frustration with an 18-month impasse over contract negotiations, but was more immediately sparked by comments Mr. Huddleston made to the New Hampshire Senate Finance Committee last week. Faculty members objected to statements he made that they said portrayed them as “stuck in the past.”

Correction (4:55 p.m.): An earlier version of this post incorrectly reported that the no-confidence vote was taken among faculty members. In fact, as reported by the Concord Monitor, the vote was taken among dues-paying members of the faculty union, a fraction of the university’s overall faculty.

This is how it’s done now, right?

The minuet begins with a vote of “no confidence” in the designated ed exec, then there is some response from the exec in question, then there’s a personal revelation of some sort bringing into question the character of the exec, then the trustees are barraged at home, the local or State-wide media get involved, students picket the exec’s home, etc.

This is all as heavily structured as a Victorian melodrama, and about as credible. It is also very, very sick.

Maybe there should be a no confidence vote on the faculty! Replace them all.
