U. of Nebraska Gets 2 Years’ Probation for NCAA Rules Violations

February 1, 2012, 9:39 pm

The NCAA has put the University of Nebraska at Lincoln on two years’ probation after finding major rules violations in its athletics programs, the association announced on Wednesday. The violations, which were discovered and reported by the university, involved impermissible benefits to nearly 500 athletes over several years. The athletes received supplemental books and supplies valued at $28,000 above what the rules allow for financial aid. The NCAA also endorsed the university’s self-imposed fine of $38,000, which was donated to local charities.

While disappointing, it is in some ways heartening to see an athletic
department fined over providing too much scholastic support to
athletes.  This is a far cry from the other sorts of “incentives”
provided to athletes at other institutions.

Good point, it is hard to get too upset over that kind of “extra-benefit.”  I know the NCAA won’t see it that way but penalty may have been less than some other forms of “corruption.”
