The governing board of the University of Montevallo, in Alabama, last week voted to grant a four-month sabbatical to the president, Philip C. Williams, who had threatened to resign unless he received the support of every trustee, according to the Shelby County Reporter. The board’s chairman said he hoped Mr. Williams would return to his post next year.

“The governing board of the University of Montevallo, in Alabama, last week voted to grant a four-month sabbatical to the president, Philip C. Williams, who had threatened to resign unless he received the support of every trustee…”. Its never advisable to threaten resignation unless you are ready to or have resigned. Its rare that a president (or anyone else for that matter) “receives the full support of every trustee”.

I didn’t threaten to resign unless I received “the support of every trustee.” As noted by tony_ross, this would be a silly demand. I had already offered to resign, but stated, in response to a reporter’s question, that I would rescind my offer if I learned that I had the support of the Board. This statement morphed into “full support of the Board,” which then morphed into “support of every trustee.”
