The regents of the University of Michigan voted on Thursday to abolish a bylaw that called for top administrators to retire during the fiscal year they turned 70, the news site AnnArbor.com reported. Under the old policy, the university’s president, Mary Sue Coleman, who is 68, would have had to retire in 2013-14, but regents said their decision was not tailored for her and was not “about any individual whatsoever.” Instead, they said, it was to bring the bylaws into compliance with the law. Jacki Miller, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, said public employers “cannot force someone to retire based upon age.”
