U. of Illinois Turns to a Leader From Its Past as Interim President

October 4, 2009, 12:51 pm

The University of Illinois has chosen a trusted leader from its past, Stanley O. Ikenberry, to serve as interim president as the university rebuilds trust after a scandal over political favoritism in admissions, the Chicago Tribune reported. Mr. Ikenberry, who is 74, led the Illinois system from 1979 to 1995, and became president of the American Council on Education in 1996. He left that post in 2001, returning to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a professor of educational organization and leadership. Mr. Ikenberry will take office as interim president in January, replacing B. Joseph White, who announced his resignation last month. The board has said it hopes to have a new president in place by August.
