Less than a year into President Obama’s administration, the University of Chicago has approached the White House about the possibility of serving as host for a future Barack Obama presidential library, Bloomberg reports. But the administration so far has not engaged in discussions on the topic. “We are trying to understand the situation as best we can now,” the university’s president, Robert J. Zimmer, told the news service. “Until the president really wants to talk about it, has some kind of direction that he’s thinking about, we really feel more specific questions are premature.”

Will Fox News be able to cover the opening ceremonies?

The real question is, do they want to?

old fogey — As a historian who has done research in several presidential libraries, I would urge President Obama to leave his papers at the Library of Congress — and for future presidents to do the same. It is expensive and annoying for researchers to traipse all over the country from Boston (JFK) to Austin (LBJ) with stops at Independence, Mo. (HST), Abilene, Kan. (Ike), Atlanta (Carter), etc. You get the picture. Centralizing these records in one obvious place would ease the burden on future historians. Although perhaps if most records are digitized anyhow these days, we can all access them from our own homes and offices.
