A theater professor for 18 years at the University of Northern Colorado has resigned from his tenured post while he faces six felony and nine misdemeanor charges of sexual misconduct with minors, The Denver Post reported. The professor, Raymond Vance Fulkerson, who is 63, had held vocal classes and housed students at his home. He was arrested in July after the police found a concealed video camera that they said Mr. Fulkerson used to film his guests. At the time, the Post reported that students had complained to the university for years, without effect, of unwanted sexual advances by Mr. Fulkerson. The university said this week it was conducting its own investigation of the case.

Apparently this professor believed he was preparing young aspiring actors for future careers in the XXX film industry. Would someone please check out his job description to see if this unit of instruction is one of his duties. His name itself should have been a red flag.

The outrageous part is the failure of the Dean and the Administration to do anything about it.How many complaints–in whatever organization–must be filed before someone acts forthrightly to investigate thoroughly these complaints? Where are all you people who so stridently condemned the Catholic church about its abuse problem? Had another agenda, did you?

Whether or not these home-based activities were part of his “job”…he more than likely has minors enrolled in his undergraduate classes as college freshmen or even if his school allows dual enrollment. I firmly believe that college faculty need to undergo background checks…not just for that region or state, but nationally, with respect to crimes against children. This won’t get all the perps, but will let future “teachers” (and that is what we are) know the higher level of ethics and professionalism that is required. Issues of privacy? In this case, I do not care…keep the predators away from students…some of which are our children attending higher ed.
