The Society for News Design has recognized The Chronicle with an award of excellence in the 2011 Best of Digital News Design contest, for an interactive graphic that allows readers to study seven decades of trends in the educational attainments of Americans. The map-based online tool, which provides a county-by-county look at educational attainment and also offers breakdowns by population, by race, and by wealth or poverty, draws on data from a range of sources and has been extraordinarily popular with readers. Other winners in the society’s competition include The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Public Radio.
