A fiery explosion in a chemistry laboratory at the State University of New York’s Canton campus caused no injuries, but the campus will be closed for the coming week while crews clean up and decontaminate buildings damaged by fire or smoke from hazardous materials that burned, the university announced. No one was in the lab when the explosion occurred on Friday morning, and firefighters have not determined its cause, the Watertown Daily Times reported. In a written statement, the campus’s president, Joseph L. Kennedy, said the university would make up some classes, maximizing “alternative classroom space,” but officials hope the closure “will be minimally disruptive in the long run.”
