Student Accused by Professor of Being an FBI Informant Brought Gun to Class for Presentation

March 8, 2010, 9:19 am

A Portland State University student accused of being an FBI informant by his professor brought a disassembled semiautomatic weapon as a visual aid for a class presentation, The Oregonian reports. John B. Hall, a tenured professor of economics, is reported to have accused the student, Zachary Bucharest, of being an informant during a January 14 class; he also reported to the university police suspicions that Mr. Bucharest carried a gun on the campus, which is forbidden by university policy, the newspaper says. Mr. Bucharest has denied being an FBI informant, and Mr. Hall was suspended with pay while Portland State investigates the episode.

A semiautomatic brought into a classroom for “show and tell?” Nutzo.

Sounds like the prof needs to see his mental health professional. drhypersonic — the article says “visual aid for a class presentation” NOT “show and tell”, which makes it sound childish and completely inappropriate. You don’t know the topic of the presentation nor the appropriateness of such as a visual aid.

The behavior of both the student and the prof seem weird. There must be a lot more behind this.

Accusing someone of being an “FBI Informant” is libel per se, IMHO. It is the same as accusing him/her of having a loathsome disease.I think the Prof needs some “quiet time”. He should be thankful he has tenure. (An adjunct like like me would be out on the sidewalk without a hearing, with a sign that reads “Will lecture for food”)Larry Gillis (Cape Coral FL)

Google “Oregonian” and review the March 6th story on this, complete with the published suspension papers for the professor in question and the three-page “investigation” report he wrote to the FBI. Not stated here but in the Oregonian’s account is that the professor not only gave permission for the firearm to be brought to class for the presentation…but he then gave the student a B+ grade for the presentation. Much more to this than meets the eye.

#5… It’s only libel if it’s not true.

wow–thanks, thestand–i checked out the Oregonian’s coverage of this. It looks like the two of them make a perfect storm of crazy. Back away slowly…no sudden movements…
