Senate Blocks Warren’s Bill to Refinance Student Loans

The U.S. Senate has blocked a bill, introduced by Sen. Elizabeth A. Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, that would allow student loans to be refinanced under the lower rates available to new borrowers. The measure, which President Obama supports, failed to gain the necessary 60 votes to advance.

The bill was part of the Democrats’ “Fair Shot” agenda, with which they are seeking to focus attention on issues that resonate with middle-class voters. Republican lawmakers called the bill a political ploy.
