Mikhail Suprun, a professor of history at Russia’s Pomorsky State University, in Arkhangelsk, has been arrested and charged with violating privacy laws because of his research into the fate of German prisoners in the Soviet gulag system during World War II, The Guardian reported. The British newspaper linked Mr. Suprun’s arrest to a Kremlin clampdown on research into political repression during the Stalin era. If convicted, Mr. Suprun would face up to four years in jail.
