Report Urges U. of Montana to Continue Investigation Into Sexual-Assault Allegations

February 1, 2012, 11:33 pm

A former state Supreme Court justice who led an investigation into alleged sexual assaults involving University of Montana students says in her final report to the university that the inquiry unearthed so many cases that it should continue, The Missoulian reported. The former justice, Diane Barz, said the continuing inquiry should be done without an “outside investigator,” and its results should be reviewed in six months to a year. Justice Barz began her investigation in mid-December, after two incidents had been identified. The number has now grown to nine. Her final report recommends a number of steps the university could take to improve its responses to complaints and to ensure its compliance with federal guidance.

I am a classicist and yes, the word oikos means home in Greek. This is the basis of oeconomics which later became economics. It was the domain of women in the time of Xenophon. The word oikos appears in the New Testament too.

    Jacques,

It seems that the GOP debate denied you fresh red meat. So sorry you had to go hungry. Maybe instead of problematizing what they talked about as a huge ruse, you can revisit your opinions of the Republican base and infer that we are largely religious but can speak intelligently about other things.

    Bobby

PS. I agree with Santorum that the collapse of the American family is the biggest problem. The only solution to our problems is to rebuild our communities by rebuilding trust and mutual support in the most fundamental of all units, the home made up of children, a mother, and a father. Everything else we talk about is a bunch of nonsense.

At the risk of reigniting mavprof’s concern over my “obsession” with the sex life of Prof. Lopez (a.k.a. , Bobby, Robert Oscar Lopez, R.O.P. Lopez and coco_rico), I’m trying to figure out:

    a) Prof. Lopez says he’s bisexual, which would indicate he has sex with more than one person.
    b) Prof. Lopez is married, with a daughter.
    c) Prof. Lopez says, “The only solution to our problems is to rebuild our communities by
rebuilding trust and mutual support in the most fundamental of all
units, the home made up of children, a mother, and a father.” (Code alert: This means no “Heather Has Two Mommies” or two-gay-guys-with-children “most fundamental of all units” allowed, or at least not considered part of Prof. Lopez’s solution to everything.)
    d) If the above means that Prof. Lopez commits occasional fundamental-unit-weakening adultery, or whether he’s like Jimmy Carter and lusts only in his heart after sexual partners other than his wife.

Ordinarily, I don’t care much about any sex life other than mine, but I find it’s weird (and yes, a little irritating) to be preached to by a proud bisexual (Prof. Lopez has proclaimed his orientation any number of times in CHE comments) who is also a conservative Republican and fan of Sarah Palin (neither entity known for approving of homosexual sex).

In sum, is Prof. Lopez’s exhortation to “rebuild[ ] trust and mutual support in the most fundamental of all units, the home made up of children, a mother, and a father” a rather egregious case of “Do as I say, not as I do”?

Perhaps ROPL is a committee? He claims to be many things, here a classicist, on his website various other things. Earlier in reply to a Berlinerblau post ROPL encouraged gay bashing.

In any case, ROPL never seems to return to any blog discussion once he’s posted.  Perhaps his (or the committee’s) real goal is to simply become a branded name by endlessly commenting on all kinds of subjects.  Too busy moving on to actually discuss anything.

Don’t think Mr Lopez has mentioned any more than his orientation. And
there’s nothing nefarious about defending the traditional family except I guess
    to prickly PC hounds.

    * “Orientation”: means, like, only in his head? Nothing actual in the real world? In that case, I’m the only three-time winner of a MacArthur Fellowship.

    * “Defending” the traditional family is one thing. Saying that “the only solution to our problems” is “to rebuild our communities by rebuilding trust and mutual support in the most fundamental of all units, the home made up of children, a mother, and a father” is another. Prof. Lopez teaches in an English Department in a big university and knows–OK, he *probably* knows–that pointedness of “the home made up of children, a mother, and a father” rather heavily implies that a home made up of two gay women with children, or two gay men with children, just don’t count as families deserving a rebuilding of trust and mutual support, or–to re-address mavprof–defending.

Gingrich comes off “as the most cerebral of the bunch” of Republican would-be nominees. Quite a distinction. Who comes off as the most moral of the bunch, or is that a dead heat for last?

It wasn’t exclusively the domain of women.  An “oikonomos” (a house-steward) could also be any slave in charge of managing the affairs of the household.  (In fact, in the New Testament, that’s exactly what an “oikonomos” is.  For more, consult the Parable of the Shrewd Manager.)

Rape tolerant campuses???????????  When the news media reports rapes in the community, the perpetrator receives bail or is held in jail, the trial begins and if found guilty, the rapist goes to jail for many years.   If the parties involved are students there is an unproductive, internal investigation.  Even in this story, four victims went to the police and still not much happens.

Internal investigations, especially involving athletes are a joke.  If you are a parent or student reading this article, my advise is to bypass the university and go straight to the police.  If you are an administrator, my advise is to require all potential hirees to submit a police report of their criminal activities.  This is common practice in foreign universities.
