A proposal to create the first public law school in Massachusetts, which touched off a fierce debate in 2005 before the idea died, has now been revived, but the state’s fiscal difficulties — plus the question of whether Massachusetts needs another law school (there are already eight private ones) — led some state officials to criticize the plan as unworkable, and led The Boston Globe to characterize this as “a baleful time” to propose such an idea.
