Richard Herman, whose resignation as chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign became effective on Monday, was among the five finalists announced on Tuesday for the presidency of New Mexico State University. Mr. Herman, who stepped down in the wake of an admissions scandal, is now a special assistant to the interim president of the University of Illinois and continues to receive his $395,500 chancellor salary, the Chicago Tribune reported. Among the other finalists is James L. Oblinger, who resigned in June as chancellor of North Carolina State University amid a scandal over the hiring of a former governor’s wife. New Mexico State is scheduling campus visits for him and the other finalists over the next few weeks, and the university’s regents are expected to make a final decision by November 19.

Dr. Rossbacher is listed as a candidate under “announced” in the article.

Why in the world would NMSU, or any university want to publicly entertain the possibility of hiring, not one, but two recently tainted individuals as its President? Does any institution care anything about the following values: Public Perception, Reputation, Message to students, faculty, alumni; Reaction from Donors, Honesty, Integrity in high office, etc., etc., etc. The taint on these two is certainly not insignificant, nor one that can be easily dismissed as a minor transgression. I marvel at the repeated public stupidty displayed by college and university trustees week after week. It is not funny as some people assert. It is actually alarming.

Weasels always help weasels rise to their highest levels of incompetence. Nothing to be alarmed about here.
