Board infighting has led a longtime higher-education administrator to walk away from the presidency at Quincy College before he even started the job. Philip Conroy was named in June as the next president of the public college in Massachusetts, but he withdrew from the job this week in part because the board could not agree on the terms of his contract, The Patriot Ledger reports. Mr. Conroy won a close vote for the position, but the hire was questioned by supporters of a former board chairman who was also a finalist for the job.

A wise decision Dr. Conroy. A lose for Quincy.

Why go into a job, knowing that a faction of the board doesn’t support you from the get-go. Smart move, Dr. Conroy.

The back story is that of a Board which by its very organization is prone to domination by local political hacks. Mr. Conroy was wise to recognize that dealing with folks like this would be an exercise in futility. Quincy is the loser, since it will be unlikely anyone of high calibre will be interested in the position now, but then I suppose they can always appoint the former Board chairman and hope he is not as back-dealing as the circumstances make him appear.
