Edison State College, a public institution in Florida that offers primarily associate degrees, has proposed creating Edison University — a separate, private institution — in an arrangement that would represent the first partnership of its kind inFlorida higher education. Graduates of the college’s two-year program would be automatically admitted to Edison University, which would be located on the public college’s campus.

I’ve thought for a long time that it is interesting that community colleges like Edison so often work under an inferiority complex, wanting to be a something they aren’t rather than fulfill their important established missions. Too bad. My experience with community colleges in Nebraska and elsewhere has been with educators who do their jobs with excellence and fill real needs for their students and communities. No need for inferiority complexes there because they are not inferior. In the current case, SW Florida already is well served by existing 4-year colleges and universities both public and private, and this step by Edison is pure ego. If someone ever takes control of public higher education in Florida this sort of thing will be stopped. Meanwhile, as usual, let the buyer (student) beware.

This is one way around Florida Statute 1001.60 (Florida College System) that states “A Florida college may not offer graduate degree programs.” (http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?mode=View%20Statutes&SubMenu=1&App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=state+college&URL=CH1001/Sec60.HTM)

To rburns and jpeters – Not to worry. Creativity and cunning is not a one way street. Florida will find a way to block this latest scheme by Edison. The Edison people have been attempting, for at least ten years, to get BA and BS Degree granting authority. The small cookies the state has tossed them in their quest to be what they are not, have never satisfied Edison’s appetite. So low and behold, we now have Edison’s latest trick. I’ll place my bets on FGCU and the State on effectively side- stepping this particular move on Edison’s Degree Chess Board.
