Psychologist in Misconduct Case Will Not Teach at Harvard U. Next Year

April 21, 2011, 12:06 pm

Harvard University’s psychology department has barred Marc Hauser from teaching next year in the wake of a faculty investigation that found him “solely responsible” for eight instances of scientific misconduct, The Boston Globe reports. Mr. Hauser, a prominent evolutionary psychologist, acknowledged last year that he had made “significant mistakes” in his research, but asked fellow scientists not to jump to conclusions while a federal investigation is still under way. He has been on leave from Harvard this year; his status next year is still being worked out, the Globe said.

Trace the “faculty investigation” link above to see the step-by-step process revealing Prof. Hauser’s fabrications. Until Prof. Hauser states “I lied” (to bolster his belief that primates can recognize certain musical patterns), keep him out of the classroom. Ironically, he could be correct about language acquisition in other species, but he, or others, will need redesigned experiments.
