Students held rallies on campuses across California and elsewhere on Wednesday in sympathy with the Occupy Wall Street movement and to call attention to cuts in public support for higher education. In one of the more confrontational gatherings, police officers in riot gear dismantled tents students had set up at Sproul Plaza, at the University of California at Berkeley, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that all three public-university campuses in San Diego County saw student protests or faculty picket lines, as California State University professors protested that system’s decision to withhold negotiated raises. Meanwhile, The Boston Globe reported that Harvard University had locked the gates to its famous Yard to prevent protesters, especially outsiders, from setting up tents there. Students later managed to erect about 20 tents.
