The Wheeling Jesuit University Board of Trustees has forced out the Rev. Julio Giulietti, president of the university since 2007, according to the Wheeling News-Register. The action followed news that an audit by NASA’s inspector general had found that the U.S. space agency “inappropriately approved, obligated, and partially expended” more than $4-million in costs incurred at the West Virginia university.

This is a disgraceful situation and perhaps an example of the kinds of presidents colleges and universities do not need: above it alls, know it alls who think they can do as they please. Even more disturbing about Giulietti is that he is a priest and a Jesuit to boot.

Jeff1- Do you know more about this situation than we are told here, because I tried to look into it, and couldn’t find what happened? This article says that NASA “did as they pleased”, not that Giulietti did. From this, it would appear that the President’s flaw was that he didn’t uncover these actions, which may have taken place before he got there in 2007. While that is something for which a President must take responsibility, I’m not sure that “disgraceful” and “disturbing” are the right adjectives.

“Even more disturbing about Giulietti is that he is a priest and a Jesuit to boot.”
So what? Donald J. McGuire, priest, Jesuit, and spiritual advisor to Mother Teresa and her order was sentenced to 25 years for sexual abuse of male minors over a period of years. His exercises were obviously not spiritual.

I am quite surprised that the President was booted for this. It sounds like there was lack of oversight on many persons’ parts, including NASA admin, but grant administration is very far removed from a President’s office! I know Fr. Giuliett and it would not be like him to let this continue had he known about it.

OK, so here is where things get really really weird… as I said, the administration of large grants is far removed from the President’s office… BUT NOT ANYMORE… Guess who used to be the
VP for Sponsored Programs, Governmental Relations &
Legal Advisor???? You guessed it! Davitt McAteer! Who has just been appointed interim PRESIDENT!
