Police Evict ‘Occupy Albuquerque’ Protesters at U. of New Mexico

October 10, 2011, 12:20 pm

Students and other protesters who were camping out at the University of New Mexico in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement were evicted at midnight last night by “at least 20″ university and state police officers, according to the Daily Lobo, the campus’s student newspaper. The protesters, who had camped since October 1, lacked the proper permit for their activity, a university official said, and had drawn complaints over the campsite’s lack of cleanliness. The 30 to 40 protesters, who call themselves “Occupy Albuquerque,” said they had been given no warning of the impending eviction, with one of them calling it “kind of sneaky” for the police to show up at midnight “prepared for a riot.”

Thank you New Mexico State Police and U of NM police for doing your job!

Probably a mistake. The students already know what a police state is. Tolerated, observed, especially by participants, the students might have learned something about democracy.

This is a sad day when student’s protesting need a permit.  Not what the founding
fathers had in mind for the 1st Amendment.

As a 1975 alum of UNM, all I can say to the “Occupy Albuquerque!” crowd is “Keep on going, guys!!” Keep getting the word out about the remorselessly unfair society and economy we are presently afflicted with. the cops move you from here, set up shop there.  As the Egyptian people defied the mailed fist of the Mubarak regime in Takrir Square, as the Syrian people are presently braving the extreme cruelty of the brutal, fascist Asad regime, we, the people will succeed, ultimately, in the liberation of our own Wall Street run Amerika.

I am appalled at the ridiculousness of the folks in Albuquerque needing a permit for protests. It is so convenient for the Powers that be to trot out those dead white guys of 1776 every July 4, and to forget the Constitution later in the day. Things have really not changed, have they now, from the glory days of Nixon calling the kids who were shot and killed at Kent State “bums”. Things have not changed from 1968 in Chicago, when Mayor Daley unleashed his brutes and thugs on defenseless protestors at the Democratic National Convention.

Clearly, the time draws near for the people, the 90-99% to take back the system.

Nice job politzei. You just made a lot more “friends” to assist and cooperate as you do your real jobs – tracking down real criminals, not peaceful protesters. How stupid can law enforcement be as government trims their numbers and their jobs become ever more dangerous – especially without citizen cooperation.

    Several observations:
    (1) And here I thought that Wall Street, banks, and mortgage companies were to behind the economy’s downfall. All time, it was the University of Arizona administration, faculty, and staff. As Ric Blaine said about the waters of Casablanca, “I was misinformed.”
    (2) (From the Lobo): “Wentworth (UA spokesman[I mean spokesperson{I mean spokesrepresentative}]) said the University waited a week to remove the protesters because they wanted to be patient with protesters and make sure they fully understood University policy….’.Maybe we were too patient, I’m not sure, she said.
    (3) “one of them calling it ‘kind of sneaky’ for the police to show up at midnight ‘prepared for a riot’.” Ummm – about two miles away, ten months ago, Jared Loughner shot 20 people – killing 6. As far as I can tell from the Lobo article, not even a nightstick, much less a gun, was drawn.
    (4) I wish the police would document (photograph) the “lack of cleanliness.” A protestor said “No one defecated”. The “next to Godliness” issue decomposes into “He said; He said.”

But of course, one must have one’s protest vetted and approved in advance by the appropriate authorities, with all appropriate forms filled out properly and in triplicate, no on-line applications allowed in order to prevent identity theft and to assure your privacy. Otherwise, how is it possible to assure that you have a safe and effective protest experience?  :-)

And if you don’t eat your meat, how can you have any pudding?
