Petition Supports Chapel Hill Researcher Demoted Over Security Breach

January 21, 2011, 10:45 am

More than 125 faculty members, alumni, and researchers at a dozen institutions have signed a petition addressed to trustees of the University of North Carolina supporting a cancer researcher on the Chapel Hill campus who was demoted after a security breach was discovered in a medical study she directs. The petition says that computer security is the responsibility of the university and its information-technology workers, as well as faculty members, and that it was unfair to single out the researcher, Bonnie C. Yankaskas, for punishment.

The story doesn’t mention that she was demoted after a hearing in front of and based on the recommendation of the FACULTY appeals committee, or that the case is currently on appeal in front of the University’s trustees—just another naked attempt to pressure the Board to decide based on PR rather than the facts. Is Yankaskas’ lawyer a member of your editorial board?

It was not a security breech, it was unethical research. She did not have consent from the patients to use their health information that contained identifiable information.

bdgriffi – Where are you getting your information that it is a consent issue? According to the article, this WAS a security breach, and all the main issues relate to data security.

jchslrc- do you understand why IRB and HIPPA regulations and protocols are in place. It is not solely a security breach; it also includes that absence of informed consent from me and 179,999 other women.
