Pennsylvania Faculty Union Is Open to 1-Year Pay Freeze

March 21, 2011, 3:40 pm

The union that represents 6,000 faculty members and coaches at Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities has agreed to negotiate a one-year salary freeze to help the state deal with its budget crunch. Officials of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties said they hoped lawmakers would back away from slashing appropriations to state colleges by about 50 percent, as proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett.

In the past we got this anyway, by the state refusing to negotiate for a year, and then not giving anything retroactive. I would not recommend my children become college professors, it is a profession in decline.

A one year freeze? Many academics have already taken pay cuts at institutions around the country. Some more than one. What will APSCUF do when programs, departments and whole colleges are eliminated in PA? Nothing, because there is nothing that they can do. My friend who is still there tell me that the cuts are already in progress. She was told that her program was to be eliminated even though enrollment was among the highest at the university. Her APSCUF rep told her that she should start looking for a job elsewhere because everything was done according to their labor contract.

I’ve posted this before, but I’ll write again that when I taught there I made a great salary and had unheard-of benefits. It’s a good gig if you can get it, AND if you can keep it. It seems unlikely that APSCUF will retain the power that they have had.

I sure hope corwinamber (below) is wrong about ours being a profession in decline, but I don’t see much evidence to the contrary.
