NSF Leads Nations in Planning Global Grant-Writing Council

The National Science Foundation isn’t yet fully sure about some key details, but it knows it wants to increase its collaborations with grant-writing agencies in other countries. After a two-day meeting at NSF headquarters, just outside Washington, the NSF’s director, Subra Suresh, and his counterparts from about 50 other countries agreed on the outlines of how they might forge common standards for reviewing grant proposals. Responding to questions afterward, Mr. Suresh said on Tuesday that he didn’t have any examples of joint projects that the new “Global Research Council” would finance, or have any sense of what proportion of U.S. government science spending should be handled by an international body.
