North Dakota Law on ‘Fighting Sioux’ Mascot Nears Repeal

November 9, 2011, 3:04 pm

The North Dakota House voted overwhelmingly this morning to repeal a law requiring the University of North Dakota to retain its controversial “Fighting Sioux” nickname and mascot, the Grand Forks Herald reported. The vote, 63 to 31, was nearly the opposite of the chamber’s vote last March to pass the original law. The repeal legislation, which has already passed the Senate, now goes to Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who has said he will sign it. The university has sought to retire the nickname, a source of dispute for years, in order to comply with an NCAA ban on “hostile or abusive” references to American Indians.

Why was the state gov’t ever involved in this?  I actually meant that to be a statement.  The state gov’t should never be involved in this.

You would not believe ND politics! It is beyond explanation. . .

Glad to see this.  The legislature should never have become involved in the way they did.  Surely they have something better to do!

Is the “fighting Irish” still OK?

Colgate University recently redesigned their mascot. The “Raider” was a Native Americain but is now a “Hawkeye” frontiersman. Ironically in the name of political correctness they replaced a minority with a white male.

Another waste of time dealing with offensive logos and mascots. The leering Indian is a bit nasty (Cleveland?) and offensive but, so what. So are many others that can be so construed by offended people. Don’t like their symbols, then don’t spend your money on such teams and products.
Many more important to things to get upset and concerned about.

Clearly, you’re not an American Indian. These logos are incredibly offensive. Not spending your money with these organizations does not mean you can avoid these offensive images entirely. They are seen frequently whether you like it or not. Should I cover my eyes every time a Redskins highlight comes on the TV? OK, I’ll do that.

Will bird lovers object to the several snarling and nasty team bird logos?
Will Notre Dame have to dump its “Fighting Irish” symbol?
Will Edinboro University (of PA) stop using “Fighting Scots” with kilt, sword and nasty expression?
Will Toledo have to dump its “Mud Hens” since it puts down chickens – or whatever a mud hen is.
