The North Dakota House voted overwhelmingly this morning to repeal a law requiring the University of North Dakota to retain its controversial “Fighting Sioux” nickname and mascot, the Grand Forks Herald reported. The vote, 63 to 31, was nearly the opposite of the chamber’s vote last March to pass the original law. The repeal legislation, which has already passed the Senate, now goes to Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who has said he will sign it. The university has sought to retire the nickname, a source of dispute for years, in order to comply with an NCAA ban on “hostile or abusive” references to American Indians.
