North Dakota’s Board of Higher Education wants the state Supreme Court to depose the University of North Dakota’s “Fighting Sioux” nickname once and for all, the Grand Forks Herald reported. Voting on Monday—five days after events compelled the university to restore the moniker, despite possible repercussions from the NCAA—the board asked the state’s attorney general to seek a judgment from the Supreme Court invalidating a law that requires the university’s athletics teams to be known as the “Fighting Sioux.” The law was repealed in November, but it was reinstated last week after petitions were filed seeking a referendum on the repeal. The referendum is scheduled for June, but it would be canceled if the court finds the law to be unconstitutional.
