NLRB Orders East-West U. to Stop Denying Work to Union Organizer

East-West University has agreed to stop retaliating against an instructor involved in its adjuncts’ union, to provide that union with requested information, and to bargain with the union in good faith, as part of a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board that was announced on Thursday. The agreement calls for the private Chicago institution to cease refusing to consider the instructor, Elvert Howard, for an available teaching position, or otherwise reducing the amount of work available to him, in order to discourage membership in the union, the United Adjunct Faculty Association at East-West University.

The settlement is not the first issued by the NLRB on Mr. Howard’s behalf. In 2010 he was one of five adjuncts involved in organizing the union who were granted new job protections as part of a similar agreement drafted in response to the university’s refusal to renew their contracts.
