The new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, which Saudi Arabia is opening today with great fanfare, is part of a vast, multibillion-dollar effort to create more than 100 colleges and universities, including world-class educational institutions to rival top-notch universities in the West, as Zvika Krieger described in a Chronicle report in 2007.
