New Group Joins Others in Championing College Completion

June 9, 2011, 2:46 pm

The Institute for Higher Education Policy announced today the creation of a new organization, the National Coalition for College Completion, that will focus on helping more low-income and minority students complete college. It joins a growing list of groups undertaking similar work, with one exception. The new coalition consists of organizations outside higher education, including the Boys and Girls Club of America, the National League of Cities, and Student Veterans of America.

College completion is a laudable goal as long as it is not at the expense of actually learning something.  Are we in danger of becoming one big Lake Wobegon U where all the students are above average?

This raises the question of why we need so many different groups focused on the same goal?  Wouldn’t it have been more productive for IHEP to join forces with College Completion America, rather than starting a competing initiative?

    Hi

I agree… why start a new organization?  Aren’t there enough already and appropriate initiatives just to meet this goal?
Moreover, what is lacking in this noble goal is not just the fact tha the students complete but also the fact that they do so timely.   I understand that you can not expect part-time students to complete their Associates and Bachelors in 2 and 4 years respectively.  However, it is alarming when a full-time “traditional student is completing his / her Associates in 3 to 4 years and Bahelors as much as by 6 years……

    best,

    Raza
